HLTAID009 to HLTAID014: what each first aid unit covers

Australian first aid training is built on five nationally recognised units. HLTAID009 is CPR only. HLTAID011 is the standard first aid certificate most workplaces ask for. HLTAID012, HLTAID013 and HLTAID014 each build on HLTAID011 for a specific setting: education and care, remote or isolated work, and advanced or high-risk roles. This page explains what each one covers, who it suits, how it is delivered and how long it takes, so you can pick the right one before you book.

The five units at a glance

Every unit is nationally recognised and issued as a Statement of Attainment by ABC First Aid RTO 3399. The difference is scope: how many situations you are trained for, and how far from help you are expected to be.

UnitBest forScopeTypical practical time

How the units nest. HLTAID011 is issued together with HLTAID009 and HLTAID010. HLTAID012, HLTAID013 and HLTAID014 are each issued together with HLTAID009, HLTAID010 and HLTAID011. So if you complete one of the three specialist units, you also hold standard first aid. How units and certificates work.

How REACHAU delivers these courses

Blended (the ideal)

You complete the theory online before the session, at your own pace. The session itself is practical, so the time together goes into hands-on skills and scenarios rather than slides.

In-session quiz, by arrangement

If online learning is not practical for you or your group, any course can run with the theory covered by a quiz during the session. This adds hours to the day. A paper version is available if required.

On site for groups

Every unit can be delivered at your workplace, school, club or community venue across Perth and regional WA. Request a group quote.

What to expect on the day, and how to prepare.

Choosing between them

  1. Start with what your role or regulator asks forCheck the unit code in your position description, your service's requirements, or your industry body's rules. If it says HLTAID011, that is your answer. If it names a specialist unit, go with that.
  2. Then think about distance from helpIf an ambulance could take an hour or more to reach your worksite or the places you travel, HLTAID013 is the unit designed for it, whatever your job title.
  3. Then think about responsibilityIf you coordinate other first aiders, manage a site or run events, HLTAID014 adds scene control and multiple-casualty skills that HLTAID011 does not.
  4. If you only need to refresh CPRBook HLTAID009 on its own. It is short and keeps your CPR current between full first aid renewals.

Common questions about first aid units

Which first aid course do most workplaces need?

HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. It is the standard unit for designated workplace first aiders and covers CPR, AED use and the full range of common emergencies. Check your role's requirements, as some settings need HLTAID012, HLTAID013 or HLTAID014 instead.

Do I need HLTAID011 before I can do HLTAID012, 013 or 014?

No. Each of those units is delivered and assessed together with HLTAID009, HLTAID010 and HLTAID011, and all are issued on your Statement of Attainment on successful completion.

How long does a first aid course take?

It depends on the unit and format. HLTAID009 is about 1 to 1.5 hours. HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 are 3 to 4 hour practical sessions after online theory, with a full day option for HLTAID011 first-timers. HLTAID013 public sessions run up to 8 hours, with longer group formats by arrangement. HLTAID014 runs up to 6 hours. Using an in-session quiz instead of online theory adds time.

Is there a physical requirement?

Yes. Assessment for every unit includes performing CPR on an adult manikin on the floor for at least two minutes. If a physical limitation could affect this, contact Britt before booking so options can be discussed.

What is the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID013?

HLTAID013 includes everything in HLTAID011 and adds extended casualty care, triage, evacuation planning and remote communications. It is recommended where an ambulance could realistically take an hour or more to arrive.

Can I do the theory on paper instead of online?

Yes, by arrangement. Online pre-course theory is the ideal, but any course can use an in-session quiz instead, which adds hours to the session, and a paper version is available if required. Talk to Britt before booking.
