The Australian Resuscitation Council identifies a sequence of actions that improve survival outcomes from cardiac arrest. Each link depends on the one before it.
Recognise the emergency and call 000 immediately.
Begin CPR to maintain circulation until help arrives.
Use an AED as soon as one is available.
Handover to paramedics and ongoing hospital care.
Good CPR keeps oxygen moving until an AED or ambulance arrives. That early action can change the outcome before emergency services reach the person.

Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction. It can progress within minutes. The most important thing a trained first aider can do is act immediately.
Australian guidelines from ASCIA are clear: if anaphylaxis is suspected, administer adrenaline without delay. If you are uncertain, it is safer to give adrenaline and not need it than to delay and find it was needed.
Every first aid course delivered here covers anaphylaxis recognition, adrenaline autoinjector use and the correct sequence of response. This is a practical skill, not a theory topic.
Raymond Cho was a secondary school student who died on 24 May 2011 from a hypoxic brain injury following anaphylaxis caused by ingesting walnuts. His case went before the NSW Coroner, with findings handed down in December 2012.
The coroner made recommendations to the Minister for Education, including stronger anaphylaxis planning and teacher training. For more detail, see the ABC News report on Raymond's story.
Raymond's story is shared to reinforce why early recognition and confidence with an autoinjector matter in schools, childcare, workplaces and community settings.
Not all first aid training is delivered the same way. Check the RTO, assessment requirements, certificate turnaround, trainer experience and whether the training gives enough practical time.
