HLTAID005 Provide First Aid in Remote Situations

What is HLTAID013?

HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in Remote or Isolated Site is a nationally recognised qualification specifically designed for workers in situations where medical assistance is likely to be delayed. It builds on standard First Aid to cover the extended period between an incident occurring and emergency services arriving — which in remote WA can mean hours, not minutes.

The unit applies to any site where access to medical assistance is not immediate. That includes agricultural and pastoral properties, fishing and marine operations, mining and resource sites, construction in regional areas, ecotourism and outdoor recreation, forestry and timber operations, and anyone who regularly works alone or in small teams away from population centres.

If you hold HLTAID005 it has been superseded. HLTAID013 is the current qualification.

Units of Competency Included

HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
HLTAID010 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support
HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
HLTAID013 Provide First Aid in Remote or Isolated Site

All four units are issued on your Statement of Attainment upon successful completion.

How Our Sessions Are Structured

Most providers run HLTAID013 as a standalone session. We do it differently — and the difference matters for the quality of your training and assessment.

Our sessions bring together participants from multiple certification levels at the same time. CPR only participants, HLTAID011, HLTAID012, HLTAID013, and HLTAID014 participants are all assessed in the same practical environment. This is not a shortcut — it is how real emergencies actually work. When an incident happens at your worksite, the people around you will have different levels of training. Your ability to coordinate that response, direct less-experienced bystanders, and manage resources under pressure is exactly what HLTAID013 assesses.

Here is how a session flows:

CPR

CPR assessment first

HLTAID009 participants are assessed first. Once complete, they are free to leave. Their presence during this phase creates a realistic environment for everyone else in the room.

Break

Short break

A brief stop for a toilet break and snack before the practical work begins in earnest.

011 / 012

HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 content

Standard First Aid and Childcare First Aid content and assessment. Everyone in the room covers this material together. HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 participants complete their assessment and are free to leave at this point.

Advanced

Advanced and Remote overlap content

HLTAID013 and HLTAID014 participants work together on shared advanced content — incident coordination, multi-casualty scenarios, vital signs documentation, and resource deployment. Advanced participants take the leadership and coordination roles that their certificate requires. Remote participants do the same alongside them. Both certificates require this capability and the shared session is where it gets assessed properly.

014 done

HLTAID014 participants leave

Once HLTAID014 assessment requirements are met, those participants are done for the day.

013 finish

HLTAID013 specific content

Any outstanding HLTAID013-specific content is covered in full — extended patient monitoring, evacuation coordination, communication equipment, environmental hazards, and remote-specific incident documentation. This is where the real depth of the remote qualification gets addressed with the focused attention it requires.

The result is a session where every certificate is awarded on the basis of genuine, individually assessed competency — not a shared tick-and-flick. And the practical scenarios are more realistic because the room reflects what a real worksite emergency actually looks like.

Common Questions

What is the difference between HLTAID011 and HLTAID013?

HLTAID011 covers standard workplace First Aid for most settings. HLTAID013 builds on that foundation with additional skills for situations where emergency services are delayed — extended patient monitoring, vital signs documentation, evacuation coordination, communication equipment, and environment-specific considerations for desert, marine, rural, and remote settings. HLTAID011 is included within HLTAID013 so you receive both qualifications on completion.

Does HLTAID013 include HLTAID011?

Yes. HLTAID013 includes HLTAID009, HLTAID010, and HLTAID011. All four units are issued on your Statement of Attainment when you complete the course. You do not need to hold HLTAID011 separately.

Is HLTAID013 required for farm workers in WA?

It is not always a legal requirement, but it is strongly recommended and increasingly expected by employers across the agricultural sector. WorkSafe WA's Code of Practice requires workplaces to consider the distance from medical assistance when determining their First Aid obligations. For farms, stations, and remote operations across WA where emergency services response is significantly delayed, HLTAID013 is the qualification that reflects the actual risk of the environment.

How long is the HLTAID013 certificate valid?

The certificate is valid for 3 years. The CPR component is recommended to be refreshed every 12 months in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines. Some employers and industries require more frequent renewal — check your specific workplace requirements.

What replaced HLTAID005?

HLTAID013 supersedes and replaces HLTAID005 Provide First Aid in Remote Situations. If your current certificate shows HLTAID005, it is time to renew under HLTAID013.

Can HLTAID013 be delivered on-site at our property or workplace?

Yes. On-site delivery is available across Western Australia including regional and remote areas. For farms, stations, mining operations, and businesses in the South West, Great Southern, and beyond, we can deliver training at your workplace. Enquire about on-site delivery.
